Reddit PM interview process

Reddit PMs must hold community viability, advertiser ROAS, and moderator labor simultaneously. Interviewers reject candidates who collapse this into a two-way "community vs. ads" framing

The Reddit PM interview is not testing general product instincts. It is testing whether you understand that community viability is the binding constraint on almost every product decision Reddit can make, and that “community vs. ads” is the wrong frame. The real tension is three-way: logged-out search visitors who arrive via Google (Reddit now appears in 42% of informational Google searches), logged-in casual users who are the primary ad target, and power-user moderators who provide unpaid quality labor that makes ad placements brand-safe. Candidates who collapse this into two sides have already misread the problem. Interviewers know it immediately.

Reddit went public on March 21, 2024 at $34 per share, its first profitable quarter arrived in Q3 2025, and FY2025 total ad revenue reached approximately $2.1 billion (74% YoY growth). The company’s DAU reached 121.4 million in Q4 2025 with a DAU/MAU ratio of roughly 8.8%, versus Instagram’s ~50%. That gap matters: it signals that Reddit’s growth is heavily driven by logged-out, search-arriving users who are harder to target and monetize. Every PM interview question at Reddit, if you trace it far enough, is about how to close that gap without destroying what makes Reddit worth visiting.

The loop structure

The standard loop runs four to six rounds. Timeline variance is real; treat any stated window as a floor.

Recruiter screen (30 minutes). Logistics and baseline framing. Expect one question testing whether you use Reddit genuinely. Saying “I use it for research” is worse than naming two or three subreddits where you actually participate. The recruiter is filtering for candidates who will have authentic community intuitions in later rounds, not people who opened the app after applying.

Hiring manager screen (45 minutes). Background plus Reddit-specific product interest. This round tests two things: whether you can articulate what Reddit is building right now (Reddit Answers, machine-translated content for international expansion, the Google data-licensing deal at ~$60 million per year, shoppable posts in testing) and whether your product instincts default to community-first. PMs who frame Reddit primarily as an ad inventory business in this conversation do not advance.

Product sense and strategy panel (60 minutes). The canonical format: “How would you improve [X Reddit feature]?” or “Design a product for [Reddit user segment].” The trap is treating it as a feature-improvement question. Strong answers surface all three user types immediately, anchor to specific metrics (CPM range $3.50 to $6.50, ROAS 3.2x for e-commerce), and name which user type bears the cost of each decision. Weak answers produce a feature list and name DAU as the success metric.

This fails for three reasons: it doesn't show knowledge of Reddit's actual ad products (Promoted Posts already exist and are labeled), it treats 'users not noticing' as the goal when the real goal is advertiser ROAS above 3x, and it offers no metric, no user segment specificity, and no tension acknowledgment. The tell is the word 'subtle.' It signals the candidate is solving for their own discomfort with advertising rather than the business problem. Interviewers flag this consistently.

Execution and metrics panel (45 to 60 minutes). Reddit-specific metrics knowledge is tested directly here. Candidates should be fluent in: DAU/MAU ratio (8.8% and what it implies), session depth (9 minutes 36 seconds, 8.4 pages per session, the highest engagement depth among major platforms), subreddit tier distribution, CPM and ROAS benchmarks, advertiser brand-safety score, and video content share (now 22% of new content, growing 38% YoY). Questions often require diagnosing a metric drop that could be explained by community dynamics or ad-side factors. Part of the test is decomposing them correctly rather than picking one narrative and running with it.

Cross-functional and behavioral panel (45 minutes). Expect stakeholder questions framed around community conflict. Strong answers frame historical tension (the 2023 API protest) as a structural lesson: moderators are a class of stakeholder with real leverage, and product decisions that don’t account for their incentives carry asymmetric downside risk. Weak answers treat it as a PR crisis Reddit handled badly.

Take-home exercise (some roles). Senior PM and AI product roles often include a written exercise. The prompt usually involves designing or evaluating a Reddit feature with a monetization component. Scoring emphasizes how explicitly you handle the three-way stakeholder tension, not creative feature generation.

The AI moderation question

Reddit now auto-removes 78% of rule violations via AI moderation. This is live product territory where PM candidates should have a view. The interview question you can expect: “Where do human moderators fit now that AI handles most removals?” The right answer is not “AI replaces moderators.” It is that AI handles volume and speed, but moderators handle community norm interpretation, context judgment, and the trust signal that comes from a human who is also a member. Candidates who can specify where the human-in-the-loop boundary sits (and why drawing it wrong erodes community trust faster than slow moderation) stand out.

What kills candidates

The two-way frame. “Community vs. ads” misses the moderator layer. Any answer that doesn’t account for unpaid moderation labor as a distinct principal will be flagged.

Generic metrics. Naming MAU as a north-star metric for any Reddit surface signals surface-level understanding. The DAU/MAU ratio at 8.8% is the most important engagement signal on the platform. Candidates who don’t cite it, or don’t know what it implies for logged-in growth strategy, miss the diagnostic layer that senior Reddit PMs think about constantly.

Not knowing Reddit’s current bets. Reddit Answers (AI-powered on-platform search, Reddit’s direct bet on owning the “authentic answer” query type), the Google data-licensing deal ($60 million per year, 42% of informational Google searches now surfacing Reddit results), and shoppable posts in testing are the live product surface areas. Candidates who don’t reference them when relevant signal generic preparation.

Ad-first framing in consumer rounds. Even in monetization-heavy roles, the interview expects you to understand that community trust is the asset advertisers are paying for. Candidates who lead every answer with advertiser value miss the signal even when the role is ads-adjacent.

The 2026 bar

The question Reddit’s PM interview is really asking: do you understand that feasibility is nearly free in 2026, but community viability is not? Almost any feature is technically buildable. The hard question is whether the moderator layer accepts it and whether it holds ROAS above the 3.2x threshold advertisers require to keep budget on Reddit rather than Meta. Candidates who treat community validation as a step after product design fail. The bar is designing with all three user types as first-order constraints, from the first sentence of your product sense answer.
